South Central is neater than you think. Much of it consists of quiet streets with trim houses and decent front lawns. Maybe a coat of new paint was called for, but that’s not unusual anywhere. What was very evident was that every window of every house had bars protecting them and every door had a heavy security screen. There was always a sense of calm, which continued, in a way, even inside the house.
