One of the demographic questions we asked is “Male/female/transgender?” And it was not always easy to tell. It’s quite different interviewing men and women because of the variety of symptoms, concerns and lifestyles. And when you come to transgender, all bets are off.
When I got my visit sheet, sometimes it was obvious that I was going to see a transgender. A name like Mike “Gloria” Smith is a dead giveaway. Often it wasn’t so clear. Even the phone interviewer was sometimes unsure and I didn’t know what gender the client was until the door opened, or until I started the interview. And occasionally, even then…….
At all events, I always enjoyed my transgender visits. And whatever confusion existed was invariably overcome by humor or theater – and usually a combination of the two.
